DIF-Jacket consortium

3 different institutions with different backgrounds and complementary contributions

CEFT

CEFT (Centro de Estudos de de Fenómenos de Transporte) stands for Transport Phenomena Research Center in Portuguese and it is active since 1996, with facilities at the Faculty of Engineering at University of Porto (FEUP). CEFT constitute a scientific area with important applications in Civil, Chemical and Mechanical Engineering. CEFT is a research unit focusing on the sub-domain of transport phenomena (heat, mass and momentum) bridging the main areas of chemical and mechanical engineering. It assembles researchers from various Departments and Institutions across Portugal, thus departing from the traditional model of vertical organization.

The group is essentially divided into two major sub-groups/topics:

Role in the project

CEFT is the DIF-Jacket project leader. The DIF-Jacket coordinator professor J. B. L. M. Campos manages the overall project and together with the researcher S. F. Neves, specifically leads the tasks of: numerical simulation work, experimental validation (of the small-scale model) and dissemination.

CEFT has accumulated along the years considerable expertise in modeling and simulations of transport phenomena, including heat, mass transport, reaction, conjugated solid/fluid heat transport and phase change. In this project, the CEFT team will focus on the development of two numerical models at different scales (small- and full-scale models) considering for the first time the transient nature of the fire scenarios and behavior actions in the R & D process of an innovative thermal protective jacket.

CeNTI

CeNTI is a private non-profit R&D institute founded in 2006. CeNTI provides applied R&D for industrial endogenization of new disruptive technologies, product engineering and upscale for companies via a B2B approach.

CeNTI’s mission is to drive the development of material solutions for product innovation across multi-TRL stages, specifically in areas encompassing Nanomaterials, Functional Materials, Smart Materials and Systems, Design and Engineering, targeting a wide range of applications in industrial sectors such as automotive/aeronautics, architecture/construction, and sport/personal protection/health and well-being.

The multi-discipline/multisector nature of CeNTI is guaranteed by a team of technologists and researchers with know-how in areas of electronics, chemistry, polymer engineering, biotech, physics, mechanical engineering, product design and software. Among its areas of expertise, CeNTI contributes for the DIF JACKET project in terms of functional materials development, surface functionalization, physical, chemical and thermal characterization. In addition, know-how on performance evaluation methodologies will be relevant for the project development comfort assessment.

Role in the project

CENTI’s team comprises a multidisciplinary team which supports different project tasks and actions. Work will be focused on the materials selection and characterization for support of the numerical work activities. It will be active on the exploration of functionalization of identified materials for thermal management and protection with identified additives for improved performance. The most promising materials developed along project will be accessed on a laboratory scale thermal validation tests and the inputs will be used for the numerical tool validation. CENTI will also provide support on the prototype construction phase of the project.

CITEVE

CITEVE is a private non-profit organization active since 1989, with facilities in Vila Nova de Famalicão, that offers technological services of the highest level in different areas: Laboratorial activities, Technological consultancy & development, R&D+Innovation, Technology Watch, Product standards and certification, Training and Fashion intelligence.

CITEVE’s mission is to support the technical and technological development of the textile & clothing industry, promoting innovation and inducing new capacities and new competences as well as helping on the definition of industrial public policies.

In the field of R&D and New product development, CITEVE gathers know-how within the most advanced and innovative technologies. CITEVE’s team has a large experience in the development of technical and functional clothing, being involved in several National and European projects in the areas of protective clothing (including for firefighters) contributing with its knowledge to DIF JACKET project.

Role in the project

CITEVE has a multidisciplinary team which will support different project tasks regarding to DIF JACKET project.

Work will focus on the selection of existing or emerging materials for incorporation on firefighter garments for fire protection and thermal management as well as commercially available textile structures that have been proven to be effective regarding these properties. On the other hand, CITEVE will also participate on experimental validation task since it has all the necessary measuring devices for the assessment of the thermophysical properties of clothing and for the achievement of product certification. In addition, CITEVE will coordinate the prototype construction task once CITEVE’s team has the knowledge required for firefighter’s protective clothing design, combining the ergonomics and functionality needs with the legislation and standards requirements.
